Book Review
By Victoria Stilwell
'How to have the perfect pet...'
I was disappointed by this book and I think anyone picking it up hoping to correct in depth training problems would be too. Although it briefly explains dog behaviours and reactions in here and it does give some basic training steps for various commands, it's not as in depth as you might think it could have been.
From watching Victoria's TV shows and knowing how good she is with dogs I expected to learn some really in depth dog psychology which would help with overall obedience in general. Instead I got basics for the most common of problems - problems which you can find the answers to with a quick online search. Reading this book has not improved my relationship with my two adult dogs, has not taught me anything new, and I'm glad I hired the book from the library rather than forking out £15 for it new! It barely took me an hour to read although in it's defence the pictures were cute!
I have a fair bit of knowledge when it comes to trainers and popular training techniques so can't say for sure how easy the book is to understand if you have no basic training knowledge at all. I think some of the step by step training information would be useful if you've just bought your first puppy though!
In conclusion this book is only worth buying if you know next to nothing. Anyone with an interest in dogs and training will probably already have learned and understood this stuff!
